Nectar and Tuft & Needle are two of the most popular bed-in-a-box mattresses in the game. Where the former employs a thick memory foam comfort layer to create satisfying pressure relief, the latter utilizes a straightforward two-layer foam design to ensure quality sleep at a value price.
Both of these mattresses promise a well-rounded sleeping experience from opposite sides of the all-foam spectrum. But which mattress is best for you? There’s only one way to find out…
If you’re in a pinch, continue to my full review summary.

Nectar vs Tuft & Needle: Which is Better for You?
Now that we’ve talked about the similarities and differences, let’s sum up who each bed might be good for:
Who Should Buy Nectar
- If you’re a side sleeper you’ll want to opt for the Nectar over the Tuft & Needle. However, light side sleepers may need something softer than either of these beds.
- If you sleep with a partner or pet you’ll want to go with the Nectar because of its impressive motion isolation.
- If you experience hip or shoulder pain, the Nectar would be a great option. Thanks to its cushioned and contoured feel, it can help relieve and prevent pain at pressure points.
We recommend this mattress for the following sleeper types: Financing options are available for this mattress. I dreaded paying for a new mattress but my old one was 15 years old…buying a Nectar was the best choice I could have made! It is so comfortable and didn’t cost an arm and a leg. I would absolutely recommend this mattress to anyone!
The original Nectar mattress is a pressure-relieving, yet supportive, bed. It’s made with a thick layer of gel memory foam, which allows the sleeper to really sink into its surface.

Who Should Buy Tuft & Needle
- I’d recommend the Tuft & Needle to back sleepers. This mattress is extra supportive, promoting neutral spinal alignment.
- If you’re a hot sleeper, the Tuft & Needle could offer cool relief, thanks to its graphite-infused foam comfort layer.
- Budget shoppers will appreciate the Tuft & Needle as well, which made our Best Mattress Under $1,000 list.
The Tuft & Needle is a surprisingly supportive all-foam mattress that back sleepers will enjoy. It’s pretty breathable, which helps it sleep cool, and comes in at an affordable price, making it ideal for budget shoppers.

Nectar vs Tuft & Needle: Similarities and Differences
As you’ll see, there are quite a few similarities between both of these all-foam mattresses, as well as a few differences that we’ll be sure to cover. For more in-depth analysis, check out the full Nectar mattress review and the full Tuft & Needle mattress review.
Main Similarities
- Each mattress is ideal for back sleepers.
- Regarding temperature regulation, both beds sleep cool. It’s worth noting that Tuft & Needle may be a bit cooler, thanks to the graphite infusion in its top layer.

Main Differences
- The Nectar is softer than the Tuft & Needle when it comes to firmness.
- While the Tuft & Needle isn’t the best fit for side sleepers, the Nectar’s contouring gel memory foam should work for a lot of side sleepers. Lighter side sleepers may want to look for something softer, though.
- Despite the similarities in some of the materials, the structures of the beds are different. The Nectar has three layers while the Tuft & Needle only has two.
- The Nectar has much better motion transfer results than the Tuft & Needle, meaning it’s the better fit for anyone sharing their bed with a partner or pet.
Nectar vs Tuft & Needle Mattress Feel Comparison
It’s time to go into greater depth about how each mattress feels. Keep in mind that people come in all shapes, sizes, and sleeping positions, so this section is always going to be somewhat subjective. I’ll do my best to touch on topics such as contouring, firmness level, and more.
Nectar
The Nectar scored a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, placing it in the category of medium-soft to medium-firm. That being said, its gel memory foam provides an “in” the bed feel. The foam layers below prevent one from sinking too far into the mattress. That’s why it’s a good fit for back sleepers or folks experiencing back pain. However, combination sleepers may not find it as easy to switch positions on this bed, as they may sink into its memory foam layer too far. Overall, it’s a nice mixture of firmness and that classic memory foam feel.
For an all-foam mattress, the Nectar Original has considerable edge support, making it a decent option for couples or anyone who sleeps with a pet.
Tuft & Needle
The Tuft & Needle is surprisingly firm, scoring a 7 out of 10 on its firmness level.
Regarding sleeping positions, the top foam layer fills in the lumbar region. Coupled with the high-density poly foam base, there’s a lot of support and pressure relief for back sleepers. Side sleepers, on the other hand, may experience a lot of jamming when they turn over. Similarly, the top foam layer may cause stomach sleepers’ hips to sink out of alignment with their shoulders.
Additionally, the Tuft & Needle offers good edge support, but only an average score on motion transfer. So you might feel your partner tossing and turning at night.
Comparing What it’s Like to Sleep on the Nectar and the Tuft & Needle
Depending on your body weight and sleeping position preference, a mattress may feel differently for you than it would for someone else. Let’s see how the Nectar and Tuft & Needle could perform for you!
Nectar
Back — I think back sleepers could find a lot of comfort in the Nectar. It should have enough sinkage to provide comfort without making you feel “stuck” in it.
Side — Side sleepers should love the classic memory foam feel of the Nectar. It offers optimal sinkage, contouring, and pressure relief.
Stomach — Stomach sleepers will need a firmer mattress to keep their hips and shoulders in line. I’d recommend checking out our best mattresses for stomach sleepers.
Body Weight — Light side sleepers may find this bed too firm, while light back sleepers should enjoy it. Lighter stomach sleepers may experience too much sinkage in the hips. Heavier sleepers won’t get the level of support they need on this mattress. For different options, check out our best mattresses for heavy people.
Tuft & Needle
Back — I’d recommend the Tuft & Needle mattress to back sleepers. This bed offers the needed support to promote a neutrally aligned spine.
Side — These sleepers should look at our best memory foam mattress picks, since this bed may not provide the soft sinkage they need.
Stomach — These sleepers may find that the Tuft & Needle is too plush. Strict stomach sleepers need a mattress that has enough lift in the hips to keep them aligned with the shoulders.
Body Weight — Lighter back and stomach sleepers should appreciate the support of this mattress. However, lighter side sleepers may experience too much firmness. This mattress is not exactly designed for heavier folks. I think they’d find it lacks the support they need. I’d recommend this group to take a look at our best mattresses for heavy people instead.

Comparing Nectar and Tuft & Needle Mattress Materials
Let’s pull back the sheets so we can get a better idea of what both of these beds are made of.
Nectar
The Nectar Original mattress is Nectar’s flagship bed. It’s an all foam mattress that toggles between contouring and a medium-firm feel.
- Cover – First, you’ll encounter a quilted cover of polyester and nylon (a lightweight material conducive to airflow). This helps the mattress sleep cool.
- Comfort Layer – Next comes a thick layer of gel memory foam. Like the comfort layer of any good memory foam mattress, this envelops the sleeper in a cozy hug. Because of the thickness, there’s a slow response time, ensuring you won’t sink too far into the mattress.
- Transition Layer – The anti-sinkage is aided by the next layer of soft conventional foam, which has an adaptive response and provides additional cushioning and support.
- Base Layer – Finally, the base layer is made of high-density foam that establishes a foundational durability. This bottom support layer has a mattress cover to prevent slippage on the bed frame.

Tuft & Needle
The Original Tuft & Needle is a 10-inch mattress with a no-frills design of just two foam layers.
- Cover – The simple polyester cover is thin and light, promoting easy air flow throughout the bed.
- Comfort Layer – Underneath the cover, you’ll find three inches of Tuft & Needle’s patented Adaptive foam, meaning there’s a good deal of mobility and bounce. This is where the cooling tech comes in, courtesy of graphite cooling gel that works to absorb and dissipate body heat.
- Base – Uniquely, the base of the Tuft & Needle makes up most of the bed with its seven inches of high-density poly foam. While sturdy and supportive in its open-cell design (once again adding to the breathability), the fact that there are only two layers might cause heavier sleepers to sink into the bed.

Nectar vs Tuft & Needle: Best Qualities
We’ve gone over a lot today, so now the big question: which mattress should you buy? You can’t go wrong with either option, but let me take a minute to outline some features that might help you decide which might be best for your specific needs.
Nectar Best Features
- While both the Nectar and the Tuft & Needle should appeal to back sleepers, the Nectar does provide more sinkage and contouring for anyone wanting firmness as well as a classic memory foam feel.
- Nectar has a 365-day sleep trial period that, when compared to Tuft & Needle’s 100 days, might be a good fit for more cautious or hesitant buyers.
- Because the Nectar has higher motion isolation, it’s the safer option for anyone sharing a bed.

Tuft & Needle Best Features
- Back sleepers who like a buoyant feel, “on top of” feel should prefer the Tuft & Needle, especially if they’re not sharing their bed with anyone else.
- If temperature is an important concern, the Tuft & Needle scores a little higher in cooling because of the graphite infusion in the top layer.
- The Tuft & Needle offers less contouring and more support on the lumbar region due to its lack of a transition layer and extra-thick layer of high-density poly foam.
The Tuft & Needle is a surprisingly supportive all-foam mattress that back sleepers will enjoy. It’s pretty breathable, which helps it sleep cool, and comes in at an affordable price, making it ideal for budget shoppers.

Tuft & Needle Mint
The Tuft & Needle Mint mattress is the brand’s luxury take on the Original. Here are some of the key differences:
- Unlike the Original, the Mint does have a transition layer of poly foam, so it provides more contouring and edge support.
- The extra poly foam contributes added softness that should appeal to side sleepers, giving them extra support for their shoulders and hips.
- Because it’s the luxury version of the Tuft & Needle Original, it’s more expensive.
- If the Tuft & Needle Mint sounds like it might be a good fit for you, you can read the full review here.

Our Review Process
Our Sleepopolis reviewers personally test each mattress. We start by unboxing the mattress to figure out how difficult (or easy) it is to get the mattress from the box to the bed. Then, we spend time laying on the bed in different positions, taking time to assess it on our backs, stomachs, and sides. Next, we perform our Sleepopolis tests, using specialized tools to measure qualities like motion transfer, bounce, and pressure relief. Our last step is to open up the mattress and take a look at each layer. These steps allow us to give our final verdict on the mattress. Jump back to our mattress picks.
