Is the Bear Star Hybrid a Good Mattress for You?
To start off, we put each of our mattresses through something called a “Rest Test,” where we lie down on the bed for an uninterrupted 15-minute power nap. This gives us a big-picture assessment of how it performs before we get into some of our more specific tests. Here’s how my colleague Amelia felt napping on the Bear Star Hybrid mattress:
“After testing out the Bear Star, I found it to be really cozy! I loved how plush and cozy the surface of the mattress felt as I was lying on it, but I still felt super supported. Lying on my back and my side, I felt really comfortable on this bed and would definitely sleep on this at night in my own home.”
Along with the Rest Test, I want to offer some quick recommendations for the Bear Star Hybrid before we fully dive into this review since different factors, such as your body type and sleeping position, will determine whether or not a mattress will work for you.
Who I recommend the Bear Star Hybrid for
- The Bear Star Hybrid is a great mattress for back sleepers. It cradles your hips while providing enough support and pressure relief to keep your spine in alignment.
- This mattress is a nice fit for people who are combo sleepers or change sleeping positions throughout the night (especially back and side sleeping). The coils and foam make it responsive, allowing for easy movement on the bed.
- If you’re a hot sleeper, I think you’d enjoy this mattress. The soft copper-infused memory foam and individually wrapped coils help with breathability.
Who I don’t recommend the Bear Star Hybrid for
- This is not the best option for most strict stomach sleepers. The Bear Star Hybrid is too soft for this type of sleeper and will cause a stomach sleeper to sink in. If you’re a stomach sleeper, I’d recommend looking at a different option in our best mattress for stomach sleepers review.

Firmness can be subjective, as it depends on a person’s body weight and preferred sleeping position. Because of that, we like to poll a range of people at Sleepopolis to average out the firmness rating of a mattress.
Average firmness rating for the Bear Star Hybrid from the Sleepopolis testers. After laying in different positions and rolling around on the Bear Star Hybrid mattress, I ranked it a 6 out of 10 for firmness. The industry standard for medium firmness is 6.5, so it’s a little softer than average.
It’s easy to understand why the Bear Star Hybrid feels the way it does after looking at its construction. Its quilted cover has Celliant woven into it, which Bear says helps with muscle recovery. Below that layer is soft, cooling copper-infused foam. It’s cool to the touch, but a little more responsive than your typical memory foam. Another layer of foam transitions the mattress into the individually wrapped coils. With cooling foam on top of the coils, it all allows for a cooler sleeping surface that doesn’t trap body heat.

How a mattress performs often depends on your sleeping position, body type, and weight. Take a look at whether the Bear Star Hybrid fits your needs.
Is the Bear Star Hybrid a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – Light back sleepers tend to experience mattresses as a bit firmer, which makes the Bear Star Hybrid a great fit for them. These sleepers will appreciate the coils resisting sinkage and keeping them level on top of this mattress.
- Light Side Sleepers – I don’t think these side sleepers will like this mattress, as it will likely feel a touch too firm. Some lightweight side sleepers might want a softer option to feel as though their hips and shoulders are contoured better. - Light Stomach Sleepers – This mattress could feel firm enough for light stomach sleepers since it’ll feel firmer to them than those who weigh more. These sleepers need a firm mattress to avoid sinkage at the hips, which creates a bend in the spine and may lead to back pain.
Is the Bear Star Hybrid a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – These sleepers will love how the Bear Star Hybrid’s mattress foam adapts to just the right grooves to offer tension relief. But, the Bear still offers the support they need. These folks should be comfortable enough to let out a relaxing sigh of contentment.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – I like this mattress for average weight side sleepers, who should feel as though the mattress adapts to them, relieving any slight aches and pains.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – Personally, I think this mattress is too soft for average weight stomach sleepers and will not promote a healthy spinal alignment for these folks.
Is the Bear Star Hybrid a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – I think heavy back sleepers should feel comfortable on this mattress and experience some nice pressure relief from the top foam layers.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – These sleepers, especially those weighing more than 300 pounds, may sink too far into the top layers of foam to get the maximum benefits from this mattress.

Bear Star Hybrid Pain Relief Performance
How well a mattress relieves pain is also an important factor to consider. To measure how well the Bear Star Hybrid relieves pain, I tested out its pressure relief. Pressure relief refers to how evenly a bed distributes your weight. Evenly distributed weight relieves pressure (and pain) at sensitive areas like the hips, shoulders, and lower back.
I used a pressure map for this test. I put the map on top of the bed and hopped on top. The map recorded how much pressure built up while lying on the mattress and translated it into an easy-to-read graphic. Areas of blue to green indicate low pressure while areas of orange to red indicate high pressure.
Back Pain – The pressure map shows great results and no pressure building up on the back or hips while back sleeping. The Bear Star keeps the hips from sinking in too far, allowing the spine to stay in alignment. This makes me believe it’d be a great mattress for a lot of back sleepers. It also showed good results for side sleepers with back pain. Many stomach sleepers may want to opt for a firmer option though in order to prevent back pain.
Shoulder Pain – Side sleeping feels comfortable for me on this mattress and the pressure map shows very low pressure around the shoulder to back that up. The pressure map’s also showing great results for back sleepers with shoulder pain. Stomach sleepers weighing more than 130 pounds should look for a firmer option.
Hip Pain – A little bit more pressure is forming on the pressure map around the hip when side sleeping, but nothing that concerns me. I think some strict side sleepers with sensitive joints should look for a softer option, though. The pressure map shows stellar results for back sleepers with hip pain; I think they’ll feel supported and comfortable on this mattress. Average weight and heavyweight stomach sleepers could experience pain in the hips and should look for a firmer option.
Bear Star Hybrid Performance for Couples
People who sleep with a partner will want to consider some additional factors that people who sleep alone may not have to worry about. Motion isolation, mobility, cooling properties and edge support can all determine how a bed will perform for two people. Read below to learn more about how the Bear Star Hybrid does in each category.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer shows how you’ll be impacted by a partner’s movements on a mattress if they shift around or get up in the night. Motion transfer is also helpful to know about if you share a bed with a child or a pet. It’s especially good to limit motion transfer if you’re a light sleeper.
To test motion transfer on the Bear Star Hybrid, I dropped a 10-pound steel ball from 4 inches, 8 inches, and 12 inches. These heights mimic various movements, from tossing and turning to getting out of bed or jumping on top of it.
These are pretty solid results in my opinion, which tells me you shouldn’t be too bothered by nighttime movements on the Bear Star Hybrid. The memory foam comfort layer is doing a lot of the work here, dampening motion before it’s able to quake throughout the structure. While sudden jolts could cause disturbance issues, I think couples will be mostly satisfied with the bed’s motion transfer. If you want to cut down the motion transfer more, I’d look into memory foam mattresses.
Sex
Typically, couples will want a responsive mattress for sex. It allows you to easily move around. The Bear Star Hybrid has coils as its comfort layer, which adds responsiveness. It should be a nice option for couples looking to move around rather easily.
Cooling
Two people sleeping in the same bed are more likely to overheat than one person sleeping alone. For this reason, couples will want a mattress with temperature regulation. The Bear Star Hybrid uses individually wrapped coils and a soft cooling-gel foam to increase airflow in the mattress. Overall, it sleeps pretty cool. Most couples and hot sleepers should be comfortable on this mattress.
Edge Support
Edge support is a good measure of a mattress’ durability and shows whether there’s potential it’d sag in the future. A strong edge is helpful when trying to use the full surface of the mattress, which is typical for couples sharing the space.
I felt like the Bear Star Hybrid had great edge support and edge coils when I sat on the side of it and when I laid down near the edge.

The Bear Star Hybrid is non-toxic and a certified clean mattress. It aims to be breathable and have a luxurious feel while helping relieve sore joints and muscles.

Copper-infused memory foam sits below the fiber top. It’s meant to give a cool feeling and help prevent sleepers from overheating.
Comfort Layer – This layer is made of comfort foam. It aims to help with body contouring and spinal alignment when laying on the mattress.
Support Layer – Edge-to-edge individually wrapped coils make up the support layer. They are created to support alignment and bring durability to the mattress.
Base Layer – The foundation of the Bear Star Hybrid is made up of a thin layer of high-density support foam. This section provides the bed with a bit of shape and cradles the pocketed coil system.
Bear Star Hybrid Unboxing and Off-Gassing
Similar to most bed-in-a-box mattresses, the Bear Star Hybrid does release a bit of a smell once it’s opened. It’s made with CertiPUR-US® Certified foams, so it doesn’t give off a strong chemical scent when off-gassing. Any odor should go away within 24-48 hours.
Unboxing the Bear Star Hybrid and removing it from the box isn’t too strenuous, but I do recommend having someone else help.

My favorite things about the Bear Star Hybrid mattress
As a hot sleeper myself, I like that the Bear Star Hybrid is meant to help keep things cool at night. The cooling-gel foam and individually wrapped coils will provide airflow for you other hot sleepers out there.
If you’re a back sleeper, I think the Bear Star Hybrid could be a great choice for you. It’s responsive, yet breathable. Your hips will feel supported and comfortable. I felt really comfy side sleeping on this bed too and thought the top foams did a nice job cradling my pressure points. If you switch between multiple sleep positions, I found it easy to move around on and a great pick for combination sleepers. I also think it’s a great mattress for couples due to its great edge support, motion isolation, cooling abilities, and overall support.
Lastly, I think the Bear Star Hybrid is reasonably priced for a hybrid mattress, especially with the sales that Bear often runs. I think it’s a good option for people looking for a luxurious feel at a lower price point.
My Bear Star Hybrid mattress complaints
My main complaint with the Bear is it’s not quite firm enough for everyone. This bed might not be the best option for most strict stomach sleepers, who may need a bit of firmer mattress to get the durable support they need.
If you’re looking for a memory foam mattress, then this won’t meet your needs. Although there is foam inside the Bear Star Hybrid, it’s more responsive than a standard memory foam mattress. I’d suggest looking at the our best memory foam mattress roundup instead.
