Helix Midnight Mattress Overview
As a brand, Helix is all about customization. You can take a sleep quiz on their website in order to get a personalized recommendation. Plus, the Helix brand has a line of six hybrid mattresses, each one with a different firmness level. The Helix Midnight falls somewhere in the middle (more on that in a bit).
Like every product in the Helix line, the Midnight is a bed-in-a-box mattress that arrives at your door rolled up and compressed. It will undergo a 24 to 72 hour off-gassing and decompression period after it’s opened. If you have any concerns with odors during this time, leave your new bed in a well-ventilated room. This smell is nothing to worry about, and it should dissipate one its own after one or two days.

What Is the Helix Midnight Made Of?
So, what’s actually inside these beds? The Helix Midnight is 12 inches tall with four layers, while the Midnight Luxe is 14 inches tall with five layers. Let’s dive in to learn a little bit more about each specific layer in these mattresses.
Standard Helix Midnight
Cover – The Breathe Knit cover included on the Helix Midnight is made from a light, stretchy material that helps promote airflow to keep sleepers cool during the night. I found this cover to be soft to the touch.
Comfort Layer – Next up is a top layer including both Memory Plus Foam and High-Grade Helix Responsive Foam. These blended foams should help relieve pressure at the joints and offer a nice contouring feel when you’re lying down on this mattress. Memory foam can sometimes make you feel like you are “stuck” in the bed, but with the addition of High-Grade Helix Responsive Foam, which has more of a medium feel, I don’t anticipate many people having that problem with this bed. The memory foam layer also isn’t too thick in this model.
Transition Layer – A second layer of High-Grade Helix Responsive Foam separates the Memory Plus Foam in the comfort layer from the pocketed coils in the support layer below. This foam layer provides a cushioning feel and more ergonomic support for your body, and it adds some support underneath the soft memory foam above.
Support Layer – The support layer of the Helix Midnight consists of individually wrapped coils. These help to support your body, and they add a bouncy feeling to the bed so you don’t feel “stuck” in the mattress or struggle to roll over, get in and out of bed, or move positions.
Base Layer – Finally, the base of the mattress is made with a final layer of DuraDense foam for maximum support, ensuring that this mattress doesn’t sag.
Edge Support – Two sides of the Helix Midnight have reinforced edges to make sure that you can sit or sleep near the edge of this bed without fear of sinkage or sagging.
Helix Midnight Luxe
Cover – The Midnight Luxe’s breathable cover is made of Tencel, a natural fiber made from Eucalyptus. It has a soft and luxurious feel and helps with temperature regulation.
Pillow Top – Next up is a Premium Cooling Pillow Top layer quilted with gel foam to provide some initial pressure relief and cushioning.
Comfort Layer – The Helix Luxe has a two-layer comfort layer. First up is a section of High-Grade Helix Responsive Foam, which is also included in the comfort layer of the standard Helix. This material provides ergonomic support and prevents the sleeper from sinking all the way down to the coils in this bed. Next, there’s a layer of Copper Gel Memory Foam, which adds some extra contouring and pressure relief.
Transition Layer – This layer is made from Memory Plus Foam, which is also included in the comfort layer of the standard Helix Midnight. Like typical memory foam, this addition allows for added pressure relief around sensitive areas like the shoulders, hips, and lower back.
Support Layer – Next up is a layer of 1,000+ individually wrapped coils. These coils have zoned support, which means that they’re softer at the shoulders for added pressure relief and firmer at the hips to help promote a neutral spinal alignment. Zoned support is great for sleepers with back pain, as it helps keep the spine nice and straight (the key to preventing and soothing back pain).
Base Layer – Lastly, the Helix Midnight Luxe includes a layer of DuraDense foam, just like in the standard model. This foam adds a bit of support and durability to this mattress.
Edge Support – All four sides of the Helix Midnight Luxe model have reinforcement around them to make sure that you can use the full surface area of your mattress without fear of falling off the sides.
Helix Midnight Mattress Firmness
Before we get into this, a quick reminder — mattress firmness is not an objective measure. Your weight, sleep position, and personal preferences will inform how hard or soft you find any given model. That said, we try to give you a balanced firmness score by having several colleagues try out the Helix Midnight. They give their rating; then, we average the scores together.
After lying on the mattress for a while and tallying everyone else’s scores, I gave the Helix Midnight a 6 out of 10 rating on our mattress firmness scale (with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest), making it a medium-soft to medium-firm bed. I would recommend this mattress for side or back sleepers because it’s supportive, without putting pressure on your joints. This model also has a nice, bouncy feel, thanks to its hybrid construction. That means it’s easy to roll around on, so combination sleepers shouldn’t have trouble changing positions during the night.
The Midnight Luxe has an extra pillow top layer and zoned support in its construction. It feels more cushioning than the standard Midnight, but, in the end, I also gave it a 6 out of 10 rating on our firmness scale. I’d especially recommend this mattress to sleepers who suffer from back pain, since zoned support helps promote a healthy, straight spinal alignment.

Sleeping Position and Body Weight
We recognize that people come in all shapes and sizes, and people of every size deserve a mattress that works for their body type. We use the weight categories light, average, and heavy to more easily categorize sleepers based on how mattresses will perform for their body type, as most beds are designed for the group we call “average” (130 to 250 pounds).
As a general rule, lighter sleepers don’t require as much support as average weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average weight sleepers, and they usually sink into their mattress more.
As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers tend to need a softer mattress, while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers typically fall somewhere in the middle.
Is the Helix Midnight a Good Mattress for Light Sleepers (Under 130 pounds)?
- Light Back Sleepers – These sleepers should be happy on the Midnight or Midnight Luxe, as they’ll get some nice contouring around their lower back.
- Light Side Sleepers – Lighter side sleepers could be happy on either Midnight model, but if they prefer an especially soft bed, I’d recommend that they check out our roundup of the best soft mattresses for more pressure relief.
- Light Stomach Sleepers – Light stomach sleepers could be happy on the Midnight Luxe if they only spend part of the night on their stomach. But, in general, I’d recommend that these sleepers opt for firmer mattress, like those in our best firm mattress roundup.
Is the Helix Midnight a Good Mattress for Average Weight Sleepers (130–250 pounds)?
- Average Weight Back Sleepers – These folks should be happy on either Midnight model. Both will offer a nice balance of pressure relief and support. If you struggle with back pain, I’d recommend opting for the Midnight Luxe, which offers a bit more lumbar support than the standard model.
- Average Weight Side Sleepers – The standard Midnight is a nice choice for side sleepers, as it won’t put too much pressure on their shoulders, hips, or other sensitive joints. The Midnight Luxe could also be a good fit for these sleepers, since it has a little bit of a plushier feel.
- Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend either Helix Midnight model for strict stomach sleepers because they typically need a firmer mattress to offer proper spinal support. These sleepers can check out our roundup of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers instead.
Is the Helix Midnight a Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (Over 250 pounds)?
- Heavy Back Sleepers – Heavy back sleepers could like the Midnight Luxe. Its zoned support structure offers a lot of lift around the hips, which should support these folks well during the night.
- Heavy Side Sleepers – Similarly, the Midnight Luxe could work for heavy side sleepers. It should offer them some nice pressure relief, while also helping them maintain a healthy spinal alignment.
- Heavy Stomach Sleepers – In general, neither Helix Midnight mattress is going to be supportive enough for heavy stomach sleepers. One of our best mattresses for stomach sleepers could be a better fit for these sleepers.
Helix Midnight Mattress Performance
At Sleepopolis, we also run a couple of specific tests on the models we review so we can make even more specific recommendations that go beyond just sleeping position and body weight. Read more below to see how the Helix Midnight performed on these evaluations.
Helix Midnight Mattress Pain Relief Performance
Pain relief is an important factor to consider when choosing a bed. It’s also closely tied to pressure relief, which is a measure of how well a bed cushions sensitive pressure points throughout the body.
To see how a mattress relieves pressure, we use a pressure map, which is basically a special mat you roll out on top of a mattress and lie down on to see how much pressure is exerted on different parts of the body. It produces a color-coded chart that shows pressure areas on a gradient ranging from low pressure (blue) to high pressure (red). Take a look at the standard Helix Midnight’s pressure map results below. The Midnight Luxe’s pressure maps looked very similar.
Before looking over the results, you’ll want to take your sleeping position into account. For example, we don’t recommend either the Helix Midnight or the Helix Midnight Luxe to stomach sleepers. So, they’ll want to steer clear of this mattress, regardless of what the pressure map says. The rule of thumb is to consider sleeping position first, then the pressure map results afterwards.
These results show that both Helix Midnight models are adept at relieving pressure for sleepers with back pain, shoulder pain, and hip pain. However, if you have to choose, we recommend the Midnight Luxe for back and shoulder pain. Sleepers with hip pain should be comfortable on either Helix Midnight model.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is a measure of how much motion a mattress is able to absorb. It tells you how disturbed you’ll feel by someone else’s tossing and turning on the opposite side of your bed.
We test a mattress’s motion transfer in several different ways. First, we simply lie down next to a colleague, both roll around, and see if we can feel each other’s movement. Then, we do the same thing again but with a full wine glass on the mattress. The less the liquid moves, the better the mattress is at isolating motion.
Our final test involves a seismometer. We place this device on one side of the mattress, and then we drop a 10-pound steel ball from three different heights on the other side. The seismometer measures the levels of disturbance. Here’s what the vibrations looked like on the Helix Midnight.
These results tell me that the standard Midnight is adept at isolating motion. The Midnight Luxe didn’t isolate motion quite as well, but it still did a good job overall.
Responsiveness
Responsiveness refers to how easy it is to move around on a mattress. We found it very easy to move around on both the Helix Midnight and the Helix Midnight Luxe. This tells us that both models are good mattresses for sex and combination sleeping — both of which involve moving around and changing positions. You should have no problem staying mobile on either one of these beds.
Cooling
The Midnight and Midnight Luxe both sleep cool, thanks to their breathable hybrid constructions. However, the Midnight Luxe’s Tencel cover means it sleeps a little cooler than the standard model. You can also choose to include a cooling cover on the Luxe model, which should draw more body heat away from the mattress. However, this will add on to the overall cost of this mattress.
Edge Support
Another consideration when you’re buying a mattress is edge support. Can you spread out on your mattress and still feel supported, or do you feel like you have to stay toward the center of the bed? We test this by sitting on the edge of the mattress and seeing if we feel it collapse under our weight. If there’s little give, and we still feel lifted, it’s an indicator of strong edge support.
Both of the Helix Midnight models offer solid edge support. I felt secure at the edge of both beds. However, the Midnight Luxe model has edge support reinforcement around all four sides of the bed, while the standard model only has reinforcement on two sides.
Helix Midnight Mattress Performance For Couples
When deciding if a mattress is a good fit for couples, we take several of the above performance areas into consideration. We think the Helix Midnight is one of the best mattresses for couples because it can cool down two bodies at once, it has strong enough edge support for both you and a partner to spread out, and it is good at isolating motion. This means you and your partner shouldn’t be able to feel each other tossing and turning during the night.
Finally, the Helix Midnight is responsive enough for sex. This is a plus for couples for obvious reasons.

My Final Thoughts about the Helix Midnight Mattress
Now that we’ve gone through what the Helix Midnight is made of, how it feels, and how it performs on our tests, we get to the ultimate question: Is it a good selection for you? Here’s a review of some of the pros and cons you should consider if you’re thinking about purchasing it.
Who I Recommend the Helix Midnight Mattress For
- I think both the Helix Midnight and Helix Midnight Luxe are great choices for couples. They feature low motion transfer, which means you’re unlikely to be disturbed by your partner’s movements, and they have good edge support, so you can use the whole mattress without fear of sinkage or sagging near the sides.
- Combination sleepers are likely to be happy with either model, as they are pretty responsive and both offer some bounce. Sleepers shouldn’t feel “stuck” in either of these beds, and switching positions should feel easy.
- I like both models of the Helix Midnight for back and side sleepers. Both of these beds feature a medium-soft to medium-firm feel that back and side sleepers should be happy with. I think side sleepers would especially enjoy the Midnight Luxe version of this mattress.
Who I Don’t Recommend the Helix Midnight Mattress For
- I wouldn’t recommend the Midnight mattress to heavier sleepers (those over 250 pounds). I don’t think these individuals will get the support they need from the Helix Midnight. I’d try the Midnight Luxe version instead. Helix also has a mattress specifically designed for larger body types — the Helix Plus mattress — that’s worth looking into, or customers can take a look at our roundup of the best mattresses for heavy sleepers.
- I think stomach sleepers will find both of these mattresses to be too soft for their needs. I’d steer them to the firmer Helix Dawn, or they can check out one of our best mattresses for stomach sleepers.
- Memory foam lovers won’t get the slow-moving or deep sinkage feel that they may be searching for in a mattress with the Helix Midnight. I’d check out one of our favorite memory foam mattresses instead.

The Saatva is a luxury innerspring mattress with two layers of coils. These springs give the mattress a lot of support, bounce, and responsiveness. It comes in three different firmness levels: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm.
- Price: As a luxury option, the Saatva is significantly more expensive than the Helix Midnight.
- Sleeping position: The Saatva can accommodate all sleeping positions, since it comes in varying firmness levels (we recommend the Plush Soft for side sleepers, the Luxury Firm for back sleepers, and the Firm for Stomach Sleepers).
- Cooling: While both mattresses excel at cooling, the Saatva has a slight advantage over the Helix Midnight because of all the coils included in its construction.
- Body weight: The Saatva is by far the better option for heavy sleepers (those over 250 pounds).

Construction-wise, the Casper differs from the Helix Midnight in the fact that it’s made entirely of foam, with no springs. This bed is also firmer than the Helix Midnight, due to the density of its materials. Because of this, it scored a 7 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale (the Helix Midnight scored a 6).
- Price: Before discounts, the Helix Midnight is just a little bit more expensive than the Casper.
- Sleeping position: Back sleepers and side sleepers are both going to be comfortable on either of these mattresses, and neither one is going to be comfortable for stomach sleepers.
- Cooling: While the Casper sleeps fairly cool for a foam mattress, the Helix Midnight wins out because of all the airflow in its coils.
- Body weight: Heavy side sleepers could be comfortable on the Casper, but for the most part, anyone over 250 pounds should seek out a more supportive bed.

Like the Helix Midnight, the original DreamCloud has a hybrid construction, but it is a bit firmer, as it scored a 7 on our firmness scale. This bed also has several luxurious features similar to what you’d find in a high-end hotel, including a cashmere-blend cover.
- Price: At the moment, the Helix Midnight and the DreamCloud are similarly priced before discounts.
- Sleeping position: Both options are excellent choices for back sleepers. Side sleepers should stick with the Helix Midnight, and while combination sleepers could be happy on both, they’ll probably find the DreamCloud to be more responsive. Neither option is the best choice for stomach sleepers.
- Cooling: We gave both of these mattresses high marks for cooling, but the DreamCloud wins out because of its gel infusions.
- Body weight: Although neither option is the best choice for heavy sleepers, heavy back sleepers might be comfortable on the DreamCloud.

I’d also like to share how the Helix Midnight compares to some of the other models from Helix Sleep. I’ll be comparing the standard Midnight to two other standard Helix models. As a reminder, all Helix standard mattresses are also offered as Helix Luxe mattresses.
Helix Midnight vs Helix Sunset
The Helix Sunset and Helix Midnight have a similar construction of coils and foam. However, the Sunset is much softer. In fact, it’s one of the brand’s softest models, coming in at a 5.5 out of 10 on our mattress firmness scale.
- Price: Both mattresses are the exact same price.
- Sleeping position: The Helix Sunset is the better choice for side sleepers, and the Helix Midnight is the better choice for back sleepers. Neither option is going to be a good fit for stomach sleepers.
- Cooling: Both mattresses sleep cool, thanks to their airflow-promoting coils and naturally breathable Tencel cover.
- Body weight: Neither mattress is going to be supportive enough for heavy sleepers (those over 250 pounds).

Helix Midnight vs Helix Moonlight
Also part of Helix’s original line of hybrid mattresses, the Moonlight is another soft option — much more so than the Helix Midnight, even though they have a similar construction.
- Price: All of the models in Helix’s core mattress line are the same price.
- Sleeping position: The Moonlight is best for side sleepers, and the Midnight is best for back sleepers. Neither one is going to be very comfortable for stomach sleepers.
- Cooling: I’d say that these beds have the same cooling capabilities due to their similar construction.
- Body weight: I’d tell heavy sleepers to steer clear of both mattresses and instead opt for the Helix Plus, which was built especially for larger body types.
